The term “all-natural” is often used loosely as a marketing tactic and doesn’t automatically mean a product is safe or effective. In an interview, UCSF professor of dermatology, Lindy Fox, MD, clarifies that cosmetics don’t need the approval of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration before being sold.
“The problem with the clean beauty movement is that there’s no definition of ‘clean,’” she explains. Natural ingredients can still cause allergic reactions. To combat this, scan the ingredients and do a patch test first.
Some people, especially those with oily skin, may falsely believe that their skin doesn’t need moisturizer. Others may say their skin is still dry after application. However, it doesn’t mean that you have to change how much you apply or the product itself.
Berman Skin Institute is a dermatology clinic in Sacramento, offering appointments that support patient well-being and healing through dermatologic care targeting dry skin. “What is probably happening in this case is that the skin may have too many layers of dead-cell buildup, which is blocking the moisturizers.” The dermatologists from the Berman Skin Institute explain, “As such, [women] should exfoliate first.”
Another common piece of misinformation is that a higher SPF number means you’re completely shielded from all sun damage. However, the reality is that high SPF primarily protects against UVB rays and prevents sunburns.
“Several sunscreens do not offer protection from UVA and [UVB rays], both of which can potentially travel deep into the skin, potentially causing skin cancer,” experts at the Berman Skin Institute continue explaining. To fully protect your skin, it’s important to choose sunscreens that offer broad-spectrum protection for all types of sun damage.
Every mom has had that moment when they might’ve fallen asleep with their makeup on, which they may blame for many skin problems, from oily skin to acne. That said, wearing makeup at night isn’t inherently worse than wearing it during the day since you’re wearing it for the same number of hours as you did during the day.
“The real problem with going to sleep with one’s makeup on is that it means one hasn’t gotten a chance to cleanse their skin,” Berman Skin Institute’s team clarifies. If you’re dealing with other skin concerns, consider scheduling a dermatologist appointment at their Sacramento clinic to pinpoint the root cause of the problem.
Popping or squeezing blemishes may seem satisfying and effective at preventing pimples, but it’s ultimately damaging to your skin. “Picking, pulling, squeezing, scratching… none of them help,” says acne dermatologist Dr. Ted Lain in an interview with CeraVe. “All they can do is lead to more problems and possibly worsen your acne.” Stopping these habits can be the difference between removing or worsening inflammation, scarring or stretched pores.
It can be frustrating to deal with adult breakouts when you expected acne to be just a teenage phase. “In fact, 25% of women and 12% of men in their 40s report acne,” dermatologist Mamina Turegano states in an interview. Acne can be driven by internal factors like genetics and hormonal imbalances rather than just age or even poor hygiene.
Dermatologists are urging caution as the trend of swallowing biotin or collagen pills for perfect skin persists online. “It’s important to think about supplements similarly to medications, carefully weighing the risks and benefits,” says board-certified dermatologist Dr. Lauren N. Taglia in a discussion with the American Academy of Dermatology Association.
Dr. Taglia further explains that some supplements have been linked to increased risks for birth defects, cancer risks and other skin side effects like acne and hair loss. She recommends consulting a board-certified dermatologist before taking them, while adding that most people can get the necessary nutrients from a well-balanced diet.
