While family travel is quite rewarding, it is a unique experience and the challenges start long before you reach your final destination. Getting prepared for these trips can be tough without an instruction manual, especially for those of us who are less experienced and possibly a bit more stressed about the whole thing. Here, as in almost everything in life, the key is keeping things simple!
Let’s start at the beginning with the flight schedule. With children, the ideal is to avoid early morning trips. A good night’s sleep makes all the difference to kids and waking them up at four in the morning to go to the airport is not a great idea. As for accommodation, you should find something that is comfortable, clean and which suits your needs. And no, it doesn’t necessarily have to be kid friendly. If it’s comfortable for you, then it’s passed the test. Kids can stay there too!
When it comes to what medication to take, it’s always good to talk to your paediatrician before the trip to make sure you have everything the little ones might need. You don’t need to take the whole pharmacy with you though! The same goes for clothes, which should be limited to what you actually need. In the children’s suitcases, you should organise clothes in sets that are easy to combine. In the end, you only need one set for each day. You should also have at least two sets of pyjamas and two pairs of shoes, a jacket, a raincoat and, of course, some extra T-shirts just in case. As for toiletries, the best bet is going for two-in-one products and things that can be used by the whole family.
What about toys? To take or leave behind? Toys are great for calming tantrums, so really should go. Just don’t take all of them! Before the trip, kids should choose three or four toys to take with them.
Last but not least… food! Contrary to what you may think, it’s ok to take baby food through airport security and the rest is up to you: some prefer to take just a few snacks for the trip; others take enough for any emergency that may arise during their holiday.
So those are our suggestions to ensure you have enjoy some incredible experiences all around the world. Have a good trip!
