3 Ways to Perform a Financial Spring Clean

Let’s be honest, most financial related activities aren’t that enjoyable, but that’s mostly because we’re usually having to figure out what money we owe and how we can reduce our spending.

The financial spring clean might not sound glamorous, but it’s worthwhile doing.

The reason? Because this isn’t a scary activity in which you have to deal with outgoings.

Quite the opposite; it’s a chance to not only save money, but actively boost your bank balance too. Plus, you can do it all in around an hour or so.

You could do this at any time of the year, but we think there’s value in doing it during the springtime. After all, the money you save in spring can easily be put towards your summer holiday fund!

Interrogate Your Subscriptions

Did you know that Europeans now spend nearly €700 on subscriptions every single year?

That’s a lot of money even if you’re using all of those subscriptions, but if you’re not Then, well, it’s just a waste of money.

There’ll be some subscriptions that you absolutely want to keep, but there could also be some that you don’t use as much as you used to, or which you’d actually forgotten you were still paying for.

Go through your bank statements, make a list of all your subscriptions, and cancel the ones that are non-essential. You can always resubscribe if you one day decide that you need it!

Go Through Your Drawers

Most of us are famous for putting unused items in our home’s drawers, and then promptly forgetting about them.

The good news is that, if you’ve taken that approach yourself, then you might actually be sitting on a small fortune without realising it.

So it’s worthwhile going through your drawers to check for unused or damaged goods that could be sold, and it’s an especially good time to look twice at any old jewellery you might have in your home.

It’s easier than ever to sell gold for scrap, and not only that, but since gold prices are at historically high levels, you’ll likely get even more money than you would have if you’d sold the piece years ago.

Old devices are also worth digging out of drawers, especially if they’re still in working condition, there’ll likely be someone who’s willing to buy them from you.

Check Your Savings Interest Rates

Your savings rate determines how much you earn from your savings account.

All too often, people open a savings account and then just forget about it.

While that can generally be a good approach, you don’t want to be tempted to withdraw from your savings account, after all, it is recommended to periodically check (like every spring!) that you’re getting the best possible interest rate.

If you’re not, then switching can pay off in multiple ways; many banks offer a financial incentive to switch to their savings account, providing an instant win that will be topped up by the extra savings you’ll make through the improved interest rate you’ll receive.
